What is Targeted Web Site Traffic?
Targeted web site traffic is usually the focal point of a site that is selling products or offering certain services. Compared with mainstream traffic, targeted online traffic is made up of certain online users who are interested in what a particular Web site is offering. These users are also those who are likely to convert from being an online visitor to being a consumer. Simply put, these are the individuals or entities that will likely purchase what is being offered by a web site.
Where the traffic will come from
Online firms that offer targeted traffic services usually have a network of advertisers and other sites where traffic is high. When a Web master subscribes to such a service, the visitors from these networks (usually sites that are similar in focus to the Web master’s site) are redirected to the Web master’s site. The number of visitors that will be redirected will depend on the kind of package purchased by the owner of the site.
How targeted traffic services work
In some cases, providers of this service will use pop ups and banner ads to promote a web site. These ads will appear on certain sites, more commonly in pages that have similar focus with that of the buyer’s. Web site owners can also be required to provide certain keywords and categories. When these keywords are typed in by an online visitor, the site of the buyer will appear on the list. Whether on top or at 10th place will depend on the kind of package purchased by the site owner.
For others, category targeted traffic is more appropriate. If a site is selling a product, the owner of the site can choose the category or segment where his product falls under. The provider of the targeted traffic service will put in advertisements for the site owner on Web addresses that attract people who are likely to be interested in buying the product.
There is also targeted traffic categorized by location or country. This works by prompting an online visitor to identify where he is located or what country he is from before he can enter a particular site. If the location or country is among those listed by the site owner, then the advertisement for his website will appear on the page.
Targeted web site traffic is ideal for online businesses trying to sell products or services. A web master should take note, though, that this does not guarantee sales and profits. It is just a way of narrowing the consumer population and increasing one’s chances of getting the attention of prospective purchasers. The rest, of course, is up to the website owner.

If a person could do only one thing to increase (targeted) web site traffic what would it be?
I am aware that you must do many things –this is sort of a "best bang for the buck" deal –
Make sure your site is the best it can be and give the cyberworld something no other site has.

There is not one "magic pill" to get traffic to a website. But if I were to choose only one, for me the best would be search engine (natural ranking, not paid). It is free, and it is ABUNDANT. If your site is loved by the search engines, traffic will come freely. Search engines account for 80% of my traffic - and that is free.
Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:
1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.
2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important — and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that’s additional traffic that you get for FREE!

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News. My website (see my profile) accepts free press release submission (no strings attached!)
5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.
